BUTLER -- John G. Stanton was born in the Shenandoah Valley, near Staunton, Va., March 15, 1817.  Died August 9, 1894, aged 77 years, 4 months and 24 days.  Mr. Stanton came to this State when about 18 years old and has been a resident of this county about 55 years.  He was postmaster at Newville, this county, some four years, township clerk two years;  assessor one year, constable two years, Justice of the Peace eighteen years, and Mayor of this place several years which office he was holding at his death.  He was also elected to several other offices all of which filled to the entire satisfaction of the people.  Mr. Stanton was a member of the I.O.O.F. of this place, and was a man honored and respected by all who knew him.  He leaves five children to mourn his loss, three girls and two boys.  Mr. Stanton's record is one of honor the whole way through and will ever remain a land mark to the coming generation who can see what one can do in this word is the will power is kept continually in motion.  Mr. Stanton's wife preceded his death at the age of 75 years, dying on the 9th. of last May.
